On June 8, 2022 at 16:00 (Moscow time), an online marathon will be held to coincide with the International Day of the Russian Language, which has been celebrated annually around the world since 2010. This year the holiday is dedicated to the great Russian language in the world musical culture, Russian songs, musicals, operas. It will be held under the name "Russian Language in Music.

The teleconference is conducted by the UN Office and the Theatrical Russia project. It will start in the center of Russia, in Yekaterinburg, and will connect the Urals with Geneva, the capital of Switzerland.

According to Elmira Shcherbakova, moderator of the online marathon, General Director of the Cultural Seasons festival, Chairman of the Council for International Cultural Cooperation of the Eurasian Peoples’ Assembly, this is an opportunity, first of all, to present a progressive Russian region – the Sverdlovsk Region, a powerful industrial and cultural center:

"We will present unique musical performances to the participants and spectators of the marathon. Everyone will feel the beauty of the Russian language."

The online marathon will traditionally be opened by the Director of the UN Office in Geneva, Tatiana Valovaya. Also, the marathon will be attended by: Permanent Representative of Russia to the UN Office in Geneva Gennady Gatilov, Governor of the Sverdlovsk Region Evgeny Kuyvashev, Chairman of the Council of the Assembly of Peoples of Russia, First Deputy Secretary General of the Eurasian Peoples’ Assembly Svetlana Smirnova.

A review of the famous cultural institutions of Yekaterinburg related to music and dramatic art will become the basis of the online marathon. Russian classics' outstanding musical compositions will be performed by musicians of the first Children's Philharmonic, established in Yekaterinburg in 1979, soloists of one of the oldest theaters – the Yekaterinburg State Academic Opera and Ballet Theater, the Sverdlovsk State Academic Musical Comedy Theater, the Novouralsk Theater of Music, Drama and Comedy, the Ural State Academic Russian Folk Choir, students Ural Conservatory named after M.P. Mussorgsky.

The first online marathon dedicated to the Day of the Russian Language was held in 2020 by the Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation to the UN in Geneva together with the project "Theatrical Russia". It united six cities of Russia and several foreign countries and was an innovation in terms of cultural diplomacy in terms of the number of participants and spectators. 504,006 people watched the marathon.
