In Maribor, representatives of the four countries discussed preparations for the International Scientific Conference "Immortal Names"

MARIBOR. On 31 July this year, the International Research Centre for World War II in Maribor - MRC Maribor (Slovenia) held a working meeting on the preparation of the International Scientific Conference "Immortal Names".

The Director of MRC Maribor Janez Ujčič announced the readiness to organize the conference "Immortal Names" together with the Eurasian Peoples’ Assembly.

The conference will take place in November 2023 and will be dedicated to the identification and preservation of personal data of Soviet prisoners of war - prisoners of the Nazi camp STALAG XVIII D and Soviet citizens - participants of the resistance fighters in Slovenia.

It is planned to invite historians and representatives of veteran organisations from Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Slovenia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan.

The meeting was attended by: Director of the Centre in Maribor Janez Ujčič, research historian - Dr Daniel Sitter (Slovenia), Chairman of the Council on Historical Memory of the Eurasian Peoples’ Assembly - Doctor of Sciences, Professor Laila Akhmetova (Kazakhstan), Deputy Secretary General of the Eurasian Peoples’ Assembly Valery Ruzin (Russia), Chairman of the Board of the public association "Atamnyn Anamaty" ("Testament of Ancestors") Murat Moldagaliev (Kazakhstan), Head of the memorial complex "Victory Park" in Tashkent (Uzbekistan) Shukhrat Yusupov, as well as staff of the memorial complex.

Janez Ujčič informed the participants about the personal data of the prisoners of Stalag 18 D. Natives of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan were exterminated in the camp between 1941 and 1942 together with other Soviet prisoners of war. A number of names of Red Army soldiers - natives of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan were identified as a result of the work of MRC Maribor staff. The news resonated with representatives of these countries, because in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan great attention is given to the preservation of historical memory.

The representative of Uzbekistan Shukhrat Yusupov raised the issue of the need to unite the efforts of Eurasian countries in countering the demolition of monuments to Soviet soldiers in European countries.

Following the workshop, all participants expressed their willingness to assist the International Research Centre Maribor in finding descendants of the deceased prisoners and their visits to MRC Maribor and the Stalag 18 D Museum.
