Международный день детской книги весь мир начал праздновать в 1967 году по решению Международного совета по детской книге (International Board on Books for Young People, IBBY).
2 апреля, в день рождения великого датского сказочника Ганса Христиана Андерсена, человечество особо отмечает непреходящую роль детской книги в формировании духовного и интеллектуального облика новых поколений Земли.
Цели Дня детской книги — привлечь внимание к литературе, книжному искусству и книжной культуре для детей, к проблемам доступности детской книги и распространению детского чтения.
Каждый год одно из Национальных отделений IBBY получает почетное право выступать международным спонсором Дня детской книги. Определяется тема праздника, приглашается известный автор из страны-хозяйки, чтобы написать послание всем детям планеты. Один из известных художников мира создает плакат Международного дня детской книги. В дальнейшем эти материалы используются для популяризации книг и развития интереса к чтению по всему миру.
В День детской книги (раз в два года) детским писателям и художникам присуждается главная и самая престижная в данной литературной области награда — Международная премия имени Г.Х. Андерсена с вручением золотой медали (ее еще называют «Малой Нобелевской премией»). Золотую медаль с профилем великого сказочника вручают лауреатам на очередном конгрессе Международного совета по детской книге, как и Почетный диплом за отдельные книги для детей, который присуждается за иллюстрирование детских книг и их лучшие переводы на языки мира.
Традиционно к Дню детской книги во многих странах организуются различные выставки, конкурсы, представления, конференции и фестивали, посвященные лучшим детским произведениям. А также утренники и Недели детской и юношеской книги, куда приглашаются детские писатели и поэты, которые сами читают свои произведения и отвечают на вопросы маленьких читателей.

The world began to celebrate International Children's Book Day in 1967 by the Decision of the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY).
On April 2, the birthday of the great Danish storyteller Hans Christian Andersen, humanity especially notes the enduring role of the children's book in shaping the spiritual and intellectual character of new generations of the Earth.
The goals of Children's Book Day are to draw attention to literature, book art and book culture for children, to the problems of the accessibility of children's books and spreading children’s reading.
Each year, one of the IBBY National Branches receives the honorary right to act as an international sponsor of Children's Book Day. IBBY determines the theme of the holiday and invites a famous author from the host country to write a message to all the children of the planet. One of the world's famous artists creates a poster for International Children's Book Day. These materials are subsequently used to popularize books and develop a worldwide interest in reading.
On Children's Book Day (every two years), children's book authors and artists are awarded the main and most prestigious award in this literary field - the International Prize named after Hans Christian Andersen. The winners are presented with a gold medal with the profile of a great storyteller (it is also called the "Small Nobel Prize"). The laureates are awarded at the next congress of the International Council for Children's Books. The authors of the best illustrations of books for children and the best translations into world languages are awarded with an Honorary Diploma.
Traditionally, on Children's Book Day various exhibitions, competitions, performances, conferences and festivals dedicated to the best children's works are organized in many countries. Children's book authors and poets read their own works and answer the questions of young readers at the meetings during Children’s and Youth Book Week.
